The Pinot Gigrio, also known as Pinot Gris, is a white wine with a funny feature. Its grape seems red, since it has a colour scheme ranging between blue and grey. It is a variety native to Alsace –in the French-German border– within the Burgundy wine region in France. According to experts, it is only one gene away from the Pinot Noir red wine grape. In fact, the Gigrio is the result of the Noir’s mutation. The vineyards of the Pinot Gigrio spread almost worldwide: France, Romania, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Chile, Argentina… but they are particularly relevant in the northwest regions of Italy: Emilia-Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Trentino-Alto Adige and Veneto. Actually, the word ‘gigrio’ is the Italian translation of the French word ‘gris’ (whereas ‘pinot’ means ‘pineapple’, referring to the bunch’s shape). In Argentina, there are not many wineries that produce this type of white wine, but Bodega Argento is one of them. Discover with The Real Argentina blog the qualities that have turned the Pinot Gris into a variety on the rise, as well as what some of the best Argentine sommeliers think about it. Discover also the places and wineries where you can discover its flavour and aroma and the dishes which it is better paired with. Our simple pairing guide will give you some clues to find the perfect menu for your Pinot Gris wine: starters, fish –salmon–, white meat and Indian food are good choices. The Pinot Gigrio is a refreshing, sour, slightly seasoned wine with citrus aromas, although its features vary depending on the terroir. Its colour ranges from straw yellow to lemon yellow or copper yellow with even pink hints. The optimal temperature for it to be served is 8 degrees. Therefore, it is ideal to accompany summer recipes.

Grape Expectations: Less Common Varieties of Argentina Wine

We all know it originates from Cahors in south-west France, don’t we? That’s right, the Old World has had its hand in defining Argentina’s viniculture, thanks to big hitters Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and of course Malbec – from Salta in the north to Patagonia in the south…
